Have you heard of Golden milk? It is a traditional Indian drink that has its roots in Ayurveda, one of the oldest holistic medical system in the world. Although it was developed more than 3,000 years ago, it is still widely used today and has gained popularity in the Western world. In its simplest form, Golden milk is a blend of hot milk and ground turmeric which gives it a unique yellow color and some warming spices such as cinnamon , ginger , nutmeg, cloves and cardamom.
This nourishing drink is known to provide many health benefits and often used as an alternative remedy to boost immunity and keep away illness. The key ingredient which is Tumeric provides an impressive list of health benefits such as offering protection from cell damage and fighting off disease and infection.
In addition , ginger and cinnamon, which are also vital ingredients in golden milk, have strong anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammation throughout the body . It also helps preserve memory and reduce the decline in brain function from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, may help reduce symptoms of depression! The ginger also helps to relieve indigestion.
Golden milk is not only healthy , it’s a great treat for everyone with its warm, earthy flavor. You can drink it at anytime of the day and it is a wonderful addition to your evening routine to unwind before bedtime. This drink will renew you from the inside out while you sleep and you will wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world.
It is very simple and easy to make and with a few ingredients, you can have in your hand a warm cup of golden goodness in just about 5 minutes !
½ cup of light coconut milk (canned is best)
1 ½ cups of unsweetened plain oat milk (You can substitute with any other milk of your choice)
1 ½ tsp ground turmeric
¼ tsp of ground ginger (If fresh, grate 1-2 Tbsp into the mixture and then using a fine mesh strainer when serving to strain out the ginger for creamy texture)
¼ tsp of cardamom
¼ tsp of nutmeg
1 whole cinnamon stick (or ¼ tsp ground cinnamon, Stick is better)
1 Tbsp coconut oil
Sweetener of choice (i.e. maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar to taste)
How to Make It?
1. In a small saucepan, add coconut milk, oat milk, ground turmeric, ground ginger, ground cardamom, ground nutmeg, cinnamon stick, coconut oil and sweetener of choice (I usually add 1 Tbsp (15 ml) maple syrup // amount as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size).
2. Whisk to combine and warm over medium heat. Heat until hot to the touch but not boiling – about 4 minutes – whisking frequently.
3. Turn off heat and taste to adjust flavor. Add more sweetener to taste or more turmeric or ginger for intense spice + flavor.
4. Serve immediately, dividing between two glasses and leaving the cinnamon stick behind. Best when fresh, though leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Reheat on the stovetop or microwave until hot.
